HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Over the last 3 decades, strikes at USP have had recurring demands, such as:

  • salary adjustment;
  • changes in University funding;
  • hiring teachers and staff.

In 2023, the focus was on the teacher shortage at the institution. The strike of students and employees lasted 42 days until the rectory announced the opening of 148 vacancies for temporary teachers.

In 2014, the longest strike in the university’s history, lasting 116 days, professors and staff protested against the salary freeze and obtained radjustment of 5.2% and bonus of 28.6%.

In 2009, they were 57 days of strike with gains of 6.05% salary increasein addition to benefits for servers.

In 2007, the strike lasted 20 days, with 50 days of occupation of the rectory by students and employees. The action protested against the decrees of the then governor (PSDB), which expanded government control over the financial management of universities, and led to the partial review of measures.

In 2004, the strike lasted 62 days. Teachers and staff asked for a 16% salary increase and an increase in the transfer of the Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services (ICMS), USP’s main source of financing, from 9.57% to 11.6%. The strikers ended with 6% increaselower than claimed.

In 2002, the (Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences) had a broad strike. Teachers’ adherence to the strike lasted 101 days. The main reason was precisely the lack of these professionals.

At the time, FFLCH had the worst student/teacher ratio in all of USP. While at the university the number was 14 students for each teacher, at FFLCH the ratio was 35 to 1.

The demand was, in part, met. From hiring of 259 teachers demanded by students, the rectory authorized 92.

In 2000, teachers and employees pressed for a salary increase and, after 52 days on strike, they achieved 22.45% adjustmentthe largest in the historical series analyzed.

In other cases, the strikes were carried out exclusively by students, as in 2012, which lasted 4 months and called for the end of USP’s agreement with the Military Police. In 2013, students occupied the rectory during a strike. The main inflection point was the method of election for rector, which continues, even today, to be an indirect voting model.
