Lula mourns the death of Oscar Schmidt: ‘Example of obstinacy and talent’

Politicians such as Davi Alcolumbre and Geraldo Alckmin also spoke out about the death

The president Lula mourned the death of former athlete Oscar Schmidt who died this Friday (17). Lula wrote that “Mão Santa” is an example of “obstination, talent and love for the Seleção shirt”.

Lula also said that Oscar united the country around the courts, with “unforgettable pitches” and “indisputable leadership”. With five Olympics, he became the highest scorer in the history of the Games.

Finally, the president also declared that Oscar “elevated the name of the country and made him an inspiration for generations of athletes and sports lovers.”

O vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin also spoke out about the death on social media.“Brazilian sport today loses one of its greatest athletes. Oscar Schmidt, our Mão Santa, was not just a basketball player, he was a legend of world basketball, who always put Brazil’s defense on the courts first. My condolences to his family, friends and fans”, he wrote.

The president of the National Congress, Davi Alcolumbre, said on Instagram that he received it with “deep regret” the news of the death of one of the “greatest names in the history of Brazilian sport”.
