Markus Schleinzers Rose is on the road to success. This is not just because the 17th-century drama about a woman who takes on a man’s role in order to be able to live independently is cast by Sandra Hülser. Hülser is, at least since Anatomy of a casethe international star of German cinema. She can currently be seen alongside Ryan Gosling in her first, extremely successful Hollywood production – and also in Rose as the title character alongside newcomer Caro Braun, who plays her (initially deceived) wife. Both shine in Schleinzer’s brilliantly written third feature film, which not only moved the audience at the Berlinale and the Diagonale, but is now radiating out into the wider world. Completely right, because Rose is great cinema, created by a film worker with a love of detail.
