A US attack on a ship suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean claimed three lives

The US admits another deadly strike against a suspected drug-smuggling ship in the Caribbean. The number of victims of similar operations has risen to at least 180 since September.

The U.S. military said it killed three people Sunday in an attack on a suspected drug-smuggling ship in the Caribbean. TASR writes about it according to an AFP report.

US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) said it carried out a “lethal kinetic attack against a ship operated by terrorist organizations”.

Smuggling routes in the Caribbean

“Intelligence has confirmed that the vessel was navigating known smuggling routes in the Caribbean and was involved in drug smuggling operations. Three men were killed during this operation; they were narco-terrorists,” the military said in a post on Platform X.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said the United States is in an “armed conflict” with cartels in Latin America, calling such attacks necessary to curb drug smuggling and overdose deaths.

Criticism of US operations

US military officials say they carried out at least six such attacks in April, bringing the total number of people killed in such operations since last September to at least 180, according to AFP.

Critics question the legality and effectiveness of these operations, pointing out that most fentanyl enters the US by land from Mexico.
