Monitoring by the PF
Former Bolsonaro deputy Alexandre Ramagem was arrested on Monday (13) by ICE (acronym in English for United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement), the United States Immigration and Customs Control Service.
Initially, the former parliamentarian was approached due to a traffic violation, but the politician has an irregular status in the country, with his tourist visa having expired since March. Furthermore, he entered the USA with his diplomatic passport canceled by order of the STF (Supreme Federal Court).
According to the CNN BrazilRamagem was monitored by intelligence agencies since November last year. The monitoring was terrestrial, there was a search for the license plate of the car used by the former director of Abin in Florida and meetings between the PF liaison officer and American authorities.
The Federal Police are investigating whether Ramagem bought a car with a canceled passport and whether this was the vehicle he used to pick up his wife, Rebeca Ramagem, at the airport. It was from there that the PF discovered his whereabouts and began monitoring him in a kind of “campana”, when undercover agents observe someone under investigation.
The PF cannot arrest a Brazilian in another country, even if he is a fugitive from justice and his whereabouts are known. The procedure is to gather information and pass it on to the country’s police, in this case, the United States. In the first two weeks of April, Florida police officers intensified support and meetings with the Brazilian PF, through a liaison officer.
Ramagem was released two days after being arrested by ICE. THE CNN Brazilbusinessman and presenter Paulo Figueiredo stated that the release occurred after three days of efforts and that it was not necessary to pay bail for release. “It was three days of hard work, but now Ramagem is home,” he said.
