Trump activates law to expand oil production in the USA

Measure seeks to reinforce energy security and accelerate domestic fuel development in the country

The President of the United States, (Republican Party), activated, this Monday (April 20, 2026), the DPA (Defense Production Law), with the aim of accelerating and expanding the domestic development of oil and gas. The presidential determinations were sent to the US Department of Energy.

In the determination, Trump states that the action is necessary for national energy security and “readiness” of defense, since oil “Powers the United States Military, Industrial Base, and Crucial Infrastructure”.

As a result, the American president to be included in the DPA:

  1. The national oil production, refining and logistics capacity are essential resources for national defense;
  2. Presidential action is necessary for industry to deliver these resources without financial delays or limits, licensing bottlenecks, and supply chain limitations;
  3. Financial support, purchases and purchasing commitments for developing production capabilities are economical, convenient and practical methods of meeting this need.

ENERGY EMERGENCY SITUATION

The measure comes during an energy emergency caused by the interruption in oil supplies, directly linked to the conflict in the Middle East and instability in the Strait of Hormuz.

For oil companies, the initiative could facilitate the development of new projects, increasing supply on the domestic market and enabling price reductions in the medium term. On the other hand, the large-scale production of fossil fuels, in the long term, may lead to a delay in investments in renewable energy sources.
