retired minister and former president of , spoke exclusively to the column about the creation of a code of ethics for the court.
“By assigning the minister to report on the proposal, the president of the Federal Supreme Court, minister, sends an unequivocal signal: the code of conduct will not constitute a merely rhetorical piece, but an expression of real commitment to objective parameters of integrity, capable of strengthening public trust, safeguarding the institutional dignity of the Supreme Court and reaffirming that the credibility of Justice is based, primarily, on the exemplary conduct of its judges.
Deontology, by remembering the foundations of duty, does not curtail or restrict the judiciary: it preserves and strengthens it immensely.
After all, Justice is only sustained when the power of Law is accompanied (and legitimized) by the strength of the virtue of the magistrates who apply it, thus strengthening the respectability of the institution they are part of.
Therein lies the central requirement of the republican ethos.”
Alfredo Attié, president of the APD (Academia Paulista de Direito), is critical of the way in which the Judiciary has distanced itself from social issues.
“Teaching classes at Unicamp, about environmental law and the problems, experiences and proposals of people and peripheral areas, in general, it is increasingly possible to see how the Judiciary is distant from what really matters.
It has always survived by demanding privileges, given the neglect of public policies, the recognition of this importance and the fear that the role of Justice could change.”
There are supreme exceptions (Attié agrees).
The ministers and Cármen Lúcia, former presidents of the STF, took the modern Tupi.
Both visited prisons. Long before she was a minister, Cármen took supplies to prison mothers.
“special concern for the undersufficient and vulnerable, and for indigenous populations”, said minister Regina Helena Costa, from the STJ, in 2023.
It’s never too late to fix a mistake
A few days ago, when searching on the internet, I discovered a review of my book “Anatomy of Reporting” written 18 years ago by Milton Coelho da Graça, one of the best journalists I’ve ever met.
The text was published in 2008 in the virtual newspaper Comunique-se and shortly after the work was launched by PubliFolha.
Milton, with whom I worked, dominated all phases of journalistic production. He suggested the titles of the articles out loud, saying the number of characters without having to write.
He trained a generation of professionals. He was strict but kind.
The one that tortured him in Recife in 1964 did not eliminate his joy in life. Generous and supportive, I always saw him in a good mood. I called him “my guru.” He would respond, “my ayatollah.”
aged 90, victim of Covid-19.
The work brought together three excellent journalists from Rio: Janio de Freitas (in the book’s cover), and the late Milton Coelho da Graça (in the text below).
Now, the wise man must be laughing: who will trust an investigative journalist who missed this valuable piece?
“A basic book to be a (good) journalist”
‘Anatomy of Reporting – How to investigate companies, governments and courts’ is a book to teach exactly what is advertised on the cover. Frederico Vasconcelos has over 40 years of experience and is a veteran special reporter for Sheetwhere he has worked since 1985. I have known – and read – him since he arrived from Pernambuco, shortly after graduating from the Catholic University of Pernambuco. The combination of soft-spokenness, solid intellectual foundation, and relentless pursuit of the truth made him one of the best journalists I’ve met.
And his experience is very well condensed into just 150 pages. Just read and follow them (which I’m already doing) to learn the fundamentals (and refinements) of investigative reporting. I recommend it to all students and to those who, like me, believe that we can always improve.
Milton Coelho da Graça, 77, journalist since 1959. He was editor-in-chief of O Globo and other newspapers (including the clandestine Notícias Censuradas and Resistência), of the magazines Realidade, IstoÉ, 4Rodas, Placar, Intervalo and this Comunique-se’
