Gigantic octopuses were among the largest predators in the sea 100 million years ago

Millions of years ago, predators lived in the depths of the seas, whose modern relatives can hardly hold a candle to them. The legendary basking shark Megalodon is said to have reached a length of more than 20 meters, while reptiles from the ichthyo- and plesiosaur groups reached similar dimensions. The ancestors of octopods receive less attention, although molluscs can also be both predatory and very large. However, according to a bold estimate, some prehistoric octopuses can be found to be of a similar size to basking sharks and dinosaurs, as a Japanese research group is now reporting.
