Seguro asks the country to defend April and defends transparency and priority in the fight against corruption

The President of the Republic warns that fighting corruption is a priority. In his first speech as head of state, at the Carnation Revolution ceremony, Antonio José Seguro challenged the country to comply with April and defended more transparency in the exercise of public positions.

Twenty years later, the red carnation was once again clearly visible and held in the President’s lapel, a tradition that had been lost since the end of Jorge Sampaio’s terms, and in his first evocative speech on the 25th of April as head of state, he left a message for politicians.

The President recalled that there is no freedom without transparency in public office and wants priority in the fight against corruption.

Much applauded on the left of Parliament, António José Seguro reminded those who live in extreme precariousness and povertydefended a faster justicea press freedom e less pay inequalities.

And, to mark the end of the dictatorship, he left an appeal to young people and concluded: “April does not need solemn guardians, but attentive, free citizens with the capacity to criticize.”
