Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to pass through Russia during his foreign trip, which also includes destinations such as Pakistan and Oman. Moscow remains a key diplomatic ally of Iran during the conflict with the United States.
The Kremlin has repeatedly offered to take over the stockpile, proposing to store or reprocess it on Russian territory.
Although this option could, theoretically, resolve some of the main US demands in negotiations to end the war with Iran, Trump reportedly rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s offer, wanting to prevent Moscow – already a global leader – from gaining even more influence.
In addition to uranium, Iran and Russia signed a 20-year treaty in January 2025, strengthening their economic, military and political partnership. Russia views US attacks on Iran as “unprovoked aggression”, but the agreement signed by Tehran and Moscow does not include a mutual defense pact.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday that he “highly appreciated” Islamabad’s mediation efforts between Iran and the US during a telephone conversation with Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar. He also expressed Moscow’s “readiness to contribute.”
In March, the CNN reported that Russia was providing Iran with information about the location and movements of American troops, ships and planes, according to several people familiar with U.S. intelligence reports on the matter. That was the first indication that Moscow might become involved in the war.
His trip to Russia is a sign that Tehran will seek to consult its partners in the Kremlin amid the conflict.
