They are robust, lightweight, versatile and affordable. Plastic packaging is inextricably linked to food. Their production is energy-intensive, their use is usually short, and their existence is long. It takes hundreds to thousands of years for them to decompose. 300,000 tons of waste from plastic packaging are generated every year in Austria alone. More than two thirds of it is not recycled but burned.
