Indonesian authorities on Tuesday raised the death toll to 14 after a collision between two trains on the outskirts of Jakarta on Monday, in circumstances still under investigation.
According to data from the state railway company KAI, the total number of deaths in the accident amounted to 14, while 84 survivors were injured, among whom some received hospital care and others were discharged after suffering minor injuries.
A previous report, also released by the Indonesian rescue service, Basarnas, reported seven deaths, among 92 people affected.
Today “search and rescue operations continue intensely” for the “victims of the train accident that occurred at Bekasi East station”, with the removal of those who “still remain trapped on the train”, said Basarnas, in a statement.
The head of the Jakarta Search and Rescue Office, Desiana Kartika Bahari, said that the operation continues to focus on locating and removing people believed to still be inside the carriages, without specifying how many remain trapped.
The affected trains are a suburban train coming from the capital and another long-distance train, which collided on Monday night at Bekasi East station, about 20 kilometers from the capital, for causes that are still unknown.
