The preview of the country’s official inflation, measured by the Broad National Consumer Price Index 15 (IPCA-15), accelerated and reached 0.89% in Aprildriven mainly by the increase in food prices and of fuels. The data was released this Tuesday (28) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

As a result, the IPCA-15 shows a expressive advance compared to the previous month, when the rate was 0.44%. Now, the indicator accumulates an inflation of 2,39% in the year and reaches 4,37% in the sum of the last 12 months.

Of the nine groups of products and services analyzed by IBGE, expenditure on food e locomotion were the ones that weighed the most on Brazilians’ pockets. The group Food and Drinks rose 1,46%while the sector of Transport advanced 1,34%. Together, these two groups accounted for 65% of all inflation of the month.

The third sector that increased the cost of living the most was Health and Personal Care (0.93%), a direct reflection of the annual adjustment of up to 3.81% authorized by the government for the price of medicines from April 1st.

Holding a fair and going to the market became more expensive

The main pressure within the food budget came from purchases consumed at home. The so-called “food at home” accelerated from 1.10% in March to 1,77% in April.

O climate and the harvest cycles directly affected fruit and vegetables. The items that were most expensive on the shelves were:

  • Carrot: +25,43%;
  • Onion: +16,54%;
  • Long life milk: +16,33%;
  • Tomato: +13,76%;

Despite the scare in the vegetable and dairy section, some products gave consumers a little relief, with drops in the prices of litter (-4.76%) and the ground coffee (-1.58%). Eating out also became slightly more expensive, with snacks and meals registering increases in 0,87% e 0,65%respectively.

Gasoline is once again a scare in transport

The Transport bill rose sharply influenced by the direct increase in fuel prices. The fuel subgroup went from a slight drop in March (-0.03%) to a jump of 6.06% this month.

Only gasoline remained 6.23% more expensivebecoming the item with the greatest individual impact across April inflation.

On the contrary, those who traveled by plane felt the price was lower. In cities like Brasília, the drop in the cost of air tickets surpassed the 10%helping to prevent the general inflation rate from being even higher.
