Iran has proposed that nuclear negotiations only begin at a later stage, after the end of the blockade
The President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), told advisors this Monday (April 27, 2026) that he was not satisfied with Iran’s latest decision to reopen and end the conflict. The Iranian plan called for an end to the U.S. naval blockade, but did not address restrictions on Tehran’s nuclear program.
The president has insisted that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons. According to US officials, accepting the current terms could appear to be a political defeat for Trump, reported the .
White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales stated in a statement that the government will not negotiate through the press and that the president will only accept an agreement that is good for the American people and the world.
Here are the main points of the negotiation and the current scenario:
- Proposal: Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, handed the document to Pakistan on Sunday (26 April);
- Nuclear impasse: Tehran rejects suspending its nuclear program or handing over its stockpile of enriched uranium;
- Economic blockade: US blockade aims to cut off Iranian oil exports; Iran, in response, threatens to charge fees to ships transiting the strait;
- Internal division: Trump wrote on his social network, Truth Social, that there is a dispute “to human” among the “hard-line“, who would be losing on the battlefield, and the “moderate“.
Within the US government there is a debate about the use of economic pressure. Some advisers advocate maintaining the blockade for another 2 months to cause permanent damage to Iran’s energy infrastructure, forcing Tehran to concede. Other officials argue that Iran’s position has hardened and that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has strengthened its grip on power.
So far, the US government assesses that Iranian negotiators do not have authorization from the supreme leader to make nuclear concessions. Without the resumption of military actions, advisors believe that Tehran’s position is unlikely to change.
