Sergio Fausto, from Fundação FHC, comments on the current perception of the former president’s government, who turns 95 this Thursday
The general director of , Sergio Fausto, said that the right “was very upset” with the support of former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who turns 95 this Thursday (June 18, 2026), the (PT) in the 2022 elections. The statement was given in an interview with Poder360.

Regarding the left, which historically had clashes with FHC in their governments – from 1995 to 2002 –, Fausto assesses that “experience with Bolsonaro showed that the PSDB of that period was a party formed by democrats and progressives”.
For him, what remains after 24 years that the former president was outside the Planalto is “a feeling of respect”.
“Nothing like time and a few scares for people to review their concepts”, he stated.
Asked if he saw any pre-candidacy for the Presidency, such as that of (PSDB-MG), as a continuation of FHC’s political legacy, Fausto said no. “In the current PSDB, I don’t recognize the PSDB of which I was an enthusiast”.
An unavoidable figure of the New Republic, FHC has Alzheimer’s and no longer participates in public life. President of Brazil between 1995 and 2002, he co-founded the PSDB (Brazilian Social Democracy Party). He is a sociologist and one of the great creators of the Plano Real.
