Statement from the Brazilian Socialist Party comes after a nod from former president of the Senate
The PSB (Brazilian Socialist Party) on Tuesday (April 28, 2026) supported the nomination of Jorge Messias to the Federal Supreme Court. The party stated that they trust that the hearing in the Senate will confirm the attributes of the name chosen by the president (PT). The Union’s attorney general will be questioned by members of the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission) this Wednesday (April 29).
In a note ( – PDF – 2 MB), the party says that Messiah has “commitment to the Constitution, respect for democratic institutions and sensitivity to the demands of Brazilian society”. The acronym declares that Lula’s nominee to the STF meets “experience, balance, independence and public commitment” to join the Court. According to the text, “as attorney general of the Union and attorney for the National Treasury, Messias brings together all the attributes to respond to demands in the highest court of the judiciary in the country”.
The demonstration takes place after a period of political articulation around the open vacancy in the Supreme Court with . The name of (PSB), former president of the Senate, was even considered as a possible nomination for Lula.
The choice of Messias over Pacheco provoked . There was friction between Lula and the current president of the Senate, (Brazil-AP Union)amid negotiations surrounding the vacancy. After being nominated, Messias com Alcolumbre, to whom he gave public praise.
Messias’ career includes stints as attorney general of the Union and attorney for the National Treasury, positions mentioned by the PSB as elements that reinforce his technical and institutional qualifications for the STF.
After the CCJ, Messias’ nomination will be voted on by the commission. If approved, the name of the Union’s attorney general will go to the final stage in the Senate Plenary, where it will need at least 41 favorable votes from the 81 senators. Voting is secret.

Ana Paula Lobato, Rodrigo Pacheco and Soraya Thronicke are CCJ holders. Cid Gomes and Jorge Kajuru act as substitutes on the board responsible for the hearing.
The estimate is 45 votes in favor of the AGU nomination, with at least 70 senators looking to support the nomination.
Jorge Messias was nominated by Planalto to Congress on April 1st.
