EasyJet airline celebrates five years of its Faro base and reinforces its commitment to the Algarve

easyJet celebrated the fifth anniversary of its Faro base and reaffirmed its commitment to the Algarve, at a time when it increases its capacity planned for the summer by 3%.

The airline will make 1.7 million seats available during its summer operation in the region, maintaining 18 routes that connect the south of Portugal to markets such as the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

According to easyJet, this growth reflects “the success of the base and the company’s commitment to the region”, in an operation that includes the most recent connection to Newcastle.

Since the inauguration of the Faro base, in 2021, the company considers that this structure has functioned as “a growth engine for tourism and the local economy”.

Celebration unites easyJet with the orange of the Algarve

To mark the base’s five years, easyJet organized a symbolic event that brought together partners and entities linked to the success of the operation in the Algarve, including Turismo do Algarve, ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, Turismo de Portugal and Faro Airport.

The celebration sought to reinforce the connection between the airline and the region, uniting easyJet’s orange color with Algarve orange, in an initiative held in a citrus fruit orchard in partnership with AlgarOrange – Algarve Citrus Operators Association.

José Lopes, general director of easyJet in Portugal, highlighted that “it is with great pride that we celebrate five years of our base in Faro. Since 2021, the base has played a key role in supporting regional tourism and economic growth, and we are delighted to continue to build on this success with a further increase in capacity for the summer of 2026. The provision of 1.7 million seats across 18 routes, including our latest connection to Newcastle, reflects both sustained demand for the Algarve, as our long-term commitment to the region.

André Gomes, president of Turismo do Algarve, highlighted that “celebrating five years of easyJet’s base in Faro is celebrating a relationship of trust that has contributed to bringing the Algarve closer to its main European markets. In 2021, when tourism and aviation were still strongly feeling the effects of the pandemic and many uncertainties persisted regarding the pace of the resumption of international mobility, easyJet gave a clear sign of confidence in the region and in Faro Airport”.

“Five years later, this confidence was confirmed through an operation that has reinforced the destination’s air connectivity, supported regional tourist and economic activity, and helped to affirm the Algarve as one of the main gateways to Portugal. The record results achieved by the Algarve in 2025 are also a reflection of this joint work between airlines, the airport, public entities, the private sector and tourist agents. We congratulate easyJet on this journey and are grateful for the contribution it has made to an increasingly competitive Algarve, accessible and prepared for the future”, he adds.

The celebration also included the “Golden Orange” draw, which rewarded five passengers who departed from Faro Airport with round-trip flights to the Algarve.

Faro consolidates strategic role in the company’s operations

Since the start of operations to Faro in 1999, easyJet has transported around 27 million passengers, consolidating its position as one of the main airlines operating in the region.

For operations in Faro, the company has four aircraft based seasonally during the summer, in addition to another five that, although not based in the city, operate in the region throughout the year.

Presents itself as one of the largest airlines in Europe, with more than 350 aircraft, more than 1,200 routes and operations to more than 160 airports in 35 countries.

The company also highlights its environmental strategy, recalling that it published, in 2022, the plan to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050, with an intermediate target of reducing the intensity of carbon emissions by 35% by 2035.
