Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed a ceasefire in Ukraine this Wednesday (29) for May 9, the date on which Russia celebrates the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in 1945, the Kremlin said, adding that the United States supports the initiative.
During a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, Putin said he was prepared “to declare a ceasefire during the Victory Day celebrations,” his diplomatic adviser, Yuri Ushakov, told reporters.
He added that Trump “actively supported this initiative” for a day that “celebrates our common victory.”
May 9, the date on which Russia commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany at the end of the Second World War in 1945, is celebrated every year with great demonstrations of force across the country.
This year, celebrations will be scaled back for security reasons due to the threat of Ukrainian attacks, the Kremlin announced on Wednesday.
Since 2023, Ukraine celebrates the 1945 victory on May 8, just like Western countries.
