A moment of quick reaction occurred in the state of Mississippi, in the United States, where five students managed to prevent a school bus from crashing after the driver lost consciousness at the wheel.
It all happened on April 22, shortly after the vehicle left the Hancock school, with around 40 children on board. The driver, 46-year-old Leah Taylor, suffered an asthma attack and ended up passing out while trying to reach her medication.
When the bus was out of control, 12-year-old Jackson Casnave, who was sitting behind the driver, realized the situation and grabbed the steering wheel to keep the vehicle on the road. “I didn’t have time to process my emotions. I just wanted to make sure no one got hurt,” he said later.
At the same time, Darrius Clark helped brake the bus, managing to bring it to a safe stop. The 13-year-old sister contacted the emergency services, despite the panic inside. “I was scared, but I also had to help,” he revealed.
Destiny Cornelius, 15, and McKenzy Finch, 13, helped the driver, using the inhaler she had with her.

The driver recovered in the meantime and made a point of thanking the students: “I’m grateful to my students. They were the ones who saved my life and that of everyone else on that bus.”
The five young people ended up being honored by the school, in recognition of the speed and courage they demonstrated in a decisive moment.
