The Union of Unions of the Algarve marks May 1st, Labor Day, as “the day of greatest struggle in which workers and their class unions assert their just demands on the street”.
The organization emphasizes that the date occurs in a context of worsening living conditions, marked by the increase in the cost of living and the difficulties experienced by many families.
According to the statement, “workers and people are finding it increasingly difficult to buy food, pay for fuel and electricity, pay for house rent and medication.”
At the same time, the increase in profits of large companies is denounced, referring to “the scandalous increase in profits of large oil companies, large distribution companies, and banks”.
Unions criticize the Government
The Union of Unions of the Algarve accuses the PSD/CDS Government, with the support of the Liberal Initiative and Chega, of not implementing measures that mitigate the impact of the cost of living.
According to the union structure, the executive “insists on making workers’ lives hell” by maintaining policies that favor large economic groups.
In this context, May 1st will be marked by demands such as increased salaries and pensions, defense of rights enshrined in the Constitution and improvement of public services.
Workers will also demand the right to housing and better living conditions.
Rejection of labor changes
In the statement, the unions warn of the Government’s intention to move forward with a labor package, considering that “It can’t continue like this!” and that workers reject these measures.
Among the criticisms are the facilitation of dismissals, job insecurity, the deregulation of working hours and salary devaluation.
Unions also point to threats to the right to strike, freedom of association and collective bargaining.
The structure argues that the wealth produced must be better distributed, stating that “workers do not accept civilizational regression, nor the worsening of social inequalities”.
Demonstration scheduled for Faro
The Union of Unions of the Algarve calls for mobilization for the 1st of May, with a concentration in Faro.
The initiative begins at 10 am, near the municipal market, followed by a demonstration on the lawn near Teatro das Figuras.
The program also includes a cultural moment with Luís Galrito and António Hilário, as well as union interventions.
