The FBI concluded that the Portuguese killed students and his compatriot from MIT to “overcome shame and envy” for his “personal failures”, targeting people (Nuno Loureiro) and places (Brown University) that marked him negatively.

Over time, researchers said, it built a narrative of complaint and inadequacywith “little or no opportunity for those around them to observe and contextualize the importance of their behaviors”.
