The president (PT) spoke for the first time since the Senate, at an event in which he avoided mentioning the episode.
The president participated in a credit announcement for the purchase of trucks and buses. Ministers Márcio Elias Rosa (Industry and Commerce), Miriam Belchior (Civil House), Guilherme Boulos (General Secretariat) and Sidônio Palmeira (Secom) were present.
Messias went through the Senate with 34 votes in favor compared to 42 against, after being examined and approved at the level of the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission). The support of at least 41 senators was necessary to approve his name.
Now, the president has the prerogative to nominate a new name, or leave the nomination to the next president of the Republic. The head of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), told members of the opposition that he was nominated by Lula before the election.
The lack of votes demonstrated noise in the political articulation of the government, currently under the command of José Guimarães, sworn in by Lula this month to replace Gleisi Hoffmann (PT). Before the result, the minister and members of the government base guaranteed that Messias’ name would pass through the House, like the government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT).
Soon after the defeat, Lula received Messias, Guimarães, Wagner and the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, at home to discuss the episode. There, the government mapped possible betrayals by allies during the vote. The main suspicions fall mainly on members of the MDB.
At the moment, the president’s allies are betting on the dismissal of Alcolumbre’s nominees, such as ministers Waldez Góes (Integration and Regional Development) and Frederico Siqueira (Communications). According to participants at the meeting, Lula showed serenity as he sought to comfort Messias.
This Thursday, the government still faced a second defeat, with the overturning of the president’s veto on the sentences of those convicted of the attacks on January 8, 2023, which includes Jair Bolsonaro (PL). . This way, the original proposal will become law.
In the case of Bolsonaro, the decision reduces the time that the former president will spend in a closed regime from the current range of 6 to 8 years to between 2 years and 4 months and 4 years and 2 months, depending on the interpretation.
