A Russian drone violated Romanian airspace again during the attack on Ukrainian Izmail. Bucharest sent F 16 fighters and raised the alarm in the region.
The airspace of Romania was violated again on Saturday night by a Russian drone, which was part of a swarm sent to attack the Ukrainian port of Izmail, located on the other bank of the Danube near the border between Romania and Ukraine. Referring to the statement of the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the Le Monde news website reported about it, writes TASR.
- A Russian drone violated Romanian airspace during the attack.
- The Romanian defense sent fighter jets and declared an air alert.
- Warehouses in Izmail, Ukraine, were damaged during the Russian attack.
- No casualties or injuries were reported in the area.
According to the Romanian ministry, its radars detected a group of about 20 Russian drones heading towards Izmajil. The Romanian air defense subsequently sent two F-16 fighter jets into the air around 02:00 and an air alert was declared in the region.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Romania has repeatedly experienced violations of its airspace and the impact of drone remnants on its territory. The incident from last Saturday (April 25) was the first ever when a drone caused material damage on Romanian territory.
They damaged several objects
A warehouse and other objects were damaged during the Russian attacks in the port of Izmail on Saturday night, Oleh Kiper, the commander of the regional military administration of the Odesa region, informed. The fires that broke out after the drone attack were extinguished. The incident did not result in casualties or injuries.
The port infrastructure in this area is a frequent target of Russian attacks. Izmajil is a river-sea port on the Danube in the southwest of Ukraine on the border with Romania. After Russia blocked Ukraine’s Black Sea ports in 2022, the Danube ports – especially Izmail – became practically the only waterway for Ukrainian imports and exports. After the lifting of the port blockade in 2023, the importance of the Danube decreased, but Ukraine still transports shipments of ammunition and fuel through its terminals.
Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Ukrainian army reported that the Russian army attacked Ukraine with 163 drones on the night of Saturday, of which 142 were shot down or suppressed by electronic warfare tools. The Russian Ministry of Defense said in its statement that 215 Ukrainian drones were shot down over Russian regions, as well as over the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, on Saturday night.
