Congress appreciates reduction of Bolsonaro’s sentences; watch – 04/30/2026 – Brasília Hoje

This Thursday (30) the vote will be taken to overturn the president’s (PT) dosimetry bill, which reduces the sentences of those convicted of a coup d’état, in 8/1, including the former president (PL).

The proposal, states that the penalties for the crimes of coup d’état and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law should not be applied cumulatively when in the same context.

The text also provides for a sentence reduction of one to two thirds for the crimes of attempted coup or abolition when they were committed in a crowd, as long as the agent did not carry out an act of financing or exercised a leadership role.

The proposal brings reductions in both the total sentences and the minimum time in a closed regime for those convicted of the coup plot and the 8th of January. Jair Bolsonaro, for example, should have his time in a closed regime reduced from the current 6 to 8 years to something between 2 years and 4 months and 4 years and 2 months, depending on the interpretation.

Voting takes place in a joint session of the Federal Government, chaired by (União-AP), president of the Senate. If Lula’s veto is overturned, as predicted by parliamentarians, the project approved by Congress will become law.

To reject the veto, an absolute majority of parliamentarians’ votes is required, that is, 257 votes from deputies and 41 votes from senators, computed separately.
