NATO seeks to understand withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Germany

Organization works with Washington to understand details of Trump’s decision taken during diplomatic tensions with chancellor

The (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) is working with the United States to understand the details of the American decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. The repositioning was ordered by Donald Trump (Republican Party) during diplomatic tensions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU, center right). The withdrawal of US troops will be over a period of 6 to 12 months, according to the Pentagon.

NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart said this Saturday (May 2) that the alliance is “working with the US to understand the details of its decision on force posture in Germany”. The German government sought to minimize the seriousness of Trump’s measure. He described the repositioning as “in advance” and a reminder of the need for Europe to invest in its own defense.

“This adjustment highlights the need for Europe to continue to invest more in defense and assume a greater share of responsibility for our shared security”declared Hart on social media. The spokeswoman noted that NATO allies have made progress since agreeing last year to invest 5% of GDP in defense to confront the growing threat from Russia.

U.S. officials suggested that an Army brigade combat team already deployed to Germany would be withdrawn. The planned deployment of a long-range artillery battalion to the country would be cancelled. Other troops would potentially be involved in the repositioning.

Tensions between Trump and Merz motivate decision

On Monday (April 28), the German Chancellor stated that the US “humiliated” by Iranian leaders. Trump responded quickly and said that Merz “you don’t know what you’re talking about”. Soon after, he raised the possibility of withdrawing troops.

A pre-existing transatlantic divide was significantly worsened by the refusal of Washington’s NATO allies to become involved in the war with Iran after the initial US-Israeli strike on February 28, 2026. Merz had offered to use German minesweepers to help open the economically critical Strait of Hormuz. The condition was that a permanent ceasefire was in place and the mission had a UN (United Nations) or EU (European Union) mandate.

A spokesman for the German defense ministry said the planned US withdrawal from bases in Germany demonstrated “that we must strengthen the European pillar within NATO”. “It was anticipated that the US could withdraw troops from Europe, including Germany”these. According to a spokesman for the German defense ministry, the current US troop strength in the country is estimated at 40,000 soldiers. According to the US Defense Manpower Data Centerthere were 68,000 active-duty military personnel permanently assigned to bases in Europe.

Efforts to end the war in Iran remained stalled after Trump “not satisfied” with an Iranian proposal. The proposal would involve both sides lifting their blockades of the Strait of Hormuz. Nuclear and other security issues would be temporarily sidelined. THE Wall Street Journal reported that Iran had softened its preconditions for talks. Dropped demand that the US lift its blockade before new negotiations could take place. No time for a new round of talks has been agreed yet.

A resumption of negotiations could be seen as complicated by a new wave of Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that an airstrike on the village of Kfar Dajjal killed two people. Another hit a house in the village of Lwaizeh, killing three people. Two people were also killed in an attack on Shoukin village.

Israeli military forces claimed to have hit more than 50 “infrastructure sites” of Hezbollah. They intercepted a rocket aimed at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.
