Farioli's revenge and 'Spanish Oporto': how FC Porto's 31st championship win is seen abroad

FC Porto’s 31st Portuguese championship title is being reported in various parts of the world, with echoes of Italy speaking of “revenge” for coach Francesco Farioli.

The Italian Corriere dello Sport remembers the disappointment of the Italian coach last season, when he lost the Dutch title with Ajax, after wasting a big advantage, considering that this was “Farioli’s revenge”.

“Just less than a year after mourning the defeat in the Netherlands in charge of Ajax, Francesco Farioli secured the Portuguese championship with two rounds to spare”, says the text.

‘Spanish Oporto’

Closer to home, in Spain, there is talk of ‘Spanish Oporto’, as the title of the sports club As, which also highlights Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga, who led “the ‘dragons’ to the Portuguese title after three years wandering around the League”.

As also remembers that Farioli was “one of the last bets” of Andoni Zubizarreta, who was director of the ‘dragons’, also highlighting the Spaniards Samu, “the reference in the attack”, and Borja Sainz, or the young Rodrigo Mora, Victor Froholdt and William Gomes: “point out their names, they will give something to talk about”.

Marca also highlights the three Spaniards in the squad and recalled that since the 2014-2018 period, FC Porto has not gone so long without winning the championship, which it has escaped in the last three seasons.

“They were not easy years. But, after the failed experiences of Vítor Bruno and Martín Anselmi in the first season of André Villas-Boas’ term at the helm of the club, Francesco Farioli returned the joy to a Porto that led the I League from start to finish to win its 31st League title”, writes the Madrid newspaper.

FC Porto and… Mourinho’s Benfica

In Catalonia, Sport writes that “Porto are champions of Portugal and Benfica, under Mourinho, gives the MVP award to the referee”, saying that the title, with “a Spanish accent”, came after a triumph over Alverca, under Real Madrid player Vinicius Júnior.

In Bednarek’s Poland, Kiwior e Pietuszewski

In Poland, Sport.pl says that defender Jan Bednarek “was the hero of FC Porto”, when he scored the winning goal against Alverca, also highlighting the other Poles of the ‘blue and whites’, Jakub Kiwior and Oskar Pietuszewski, while Argentine Olé Clarín said that “Alan Varela’s Porto are champions of the League in Portugal”.

Even without French players in the ‘dragons’, L’Équipe also highlights FC Porto’s 31st title, which “has not trembled and is officially champion of Portugal”.
