AM deputies elect governor after Wilson Lima resigns

Five candidates are competing for the position in an unprecedented vote at Aleam; Whoever obtains 13 votes among the 24 state congressmen wins

The 24 state deputies of the (Amazonas Legislative Assembly) choose this Monday (May 4, 2026) who will command the state Executive until January 2027. The extraordinary session is scheduled for 10 am, in Manaus (local time).

The election was called after the governor (União Brasil) and vice-governor Tadeu de Souza (Progressistas) resigned from their positions in early April.

The vote represents the first indirect election for governor in the history of Amazonas. The state Constitution determines that replacements be made by the Legislature when positions become vacant in the last two years of the term.

Aleam approved the registration of five plates on April 27th. Voting will be carried out with a nominal and open vote by deputies.

To win in the first round, the ticket must obtain an absolute majority of votes, that is, at least 13 of the 24 deputies. If none reach this number, there will be a second round on the same day, with the participation of the two most voted candidates.

In the second round, whoever obtains a simple majority wins, that is, the highest number of votes among the deputies present.

If there is a tie in the second round, a new vote will be held the following day. If the tie persists, the tiebreaker criterion will be age: the ticket whose candidate for governor is older wins. The Board of Directors will define the inauguration date together with those elected.

The notice approved on April 13 established the requirements for registering applications. The slates needed to meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Federal Constitution, be unimpeded by the Clean Record Law and have regular party affiliation. The rules exempted party conventions from being held.
