One plowed into a crowd of pedestrians in central Leipzig, killing two people and 20 others, German media reported.
According to MDR Sachsen, a major police operation is underway in the city.
According to a police spokesman, a passenger car crashed into the crowd on Grimmische Strasse. “There are several injured” but police are currently unable to provide further details on the exact circumstances of the incident and the severity of the injuries.
Leipzig police confirmed to Reuters that the driver had been arrested. As the BILD newspaper reported, at the time of his arrest he showed “signs of mental instability”.

Concern over repeated vehicle attacks
There have been several car attacks in Germany in recent years, such as at Christmas markets in Berlin in 2016 and Magdeburg in 2024 and at the ver.di union demonstration in Munich in early 2025.
The television station cited eyewitness accounts that said there were several bodies covered in sheets, as well as a stabbing incident.

Like other European countries, Germany has experienced a spate of carjackings and stabbings in recent years, some of which were religiously or politically motivated, while others were committed by people with mental health problems.
Last year, two people were killed in the western city of Mannheim when a 40-year-old man drove his car into a group of pedestrians, just weeks after a similar attack on a trade union demonstration in Munich left two dead and more than 40 injured, including many children.
