PT decides to launch its own candidate in Maranhão – 05/05/2026 – Politics

The national leadership of the PT decided to launch the vice-governor of , Felipe Camarão, as a candidate in the state after an attempt to negotiate with the current governor, Carlos Brandão, failed. President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT), popular in the state, signaled to allies that he will campaign for Camarão.

A PT member, Camarão became vice-governor in an agreement made by the current minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) and former governor of Maranhão in 2022. Brandão, who was Dino’s deputy, took over the government when he left to run for senator.

The then governor ran for re-election that year on a ticket with Camarão, who, under the terms of the agreement made that year, should be the official candidate in 2026.

Brandão, however, He launched his nephew Orleans Brandão (MDB) as a candidate. The movement angered Lula, sectors of the PT, Dino and his former political group, which still has some cohesion at the state level.

The STF minister felt betrayed and began to stand, behind the scenes, against his former ally Brandão. Because he is a Supreme Court minister, Dino makes cautious moves and avoids openly entering into discussions.

Dino’s group started to work with two hypotheses: tacitly supporting the probable candidacy for governor of the former mayor of São Luís, Eduardo Braide, and focusing on the election of two senators – the names would be (PT), who is seeking re-election to the position, and the deputy and former minister (PP) – or negotiating the launch of a third name for the state government with the forces that support Brandão.

Braide seeks to position his candidacy without direct links to Lula or the senator (-RJ), the main right-wing pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.

On the PT side, sectors of the party’s national leadership even considered supporting Orleans after Lula was nominated for a vacancy on the STF, , . This sector suspects that Dino helped in the articulation to defeat Messias, and supporting Brandão’s candidate would be a way of responding to this articulation.

Furthermore, there are local PT groups allied with the state government and who would not like to leave their spaces in Maranhão’s public machinery.

Now, the PT leadership wants to at least test Maranhão. Lula, who seeks to renew the party’s ranks, received 71% of Maranhão’s votes in the 2022 second round and is a powerful ally for local politics. Allies of the PT member believe that, if he had spoken out earlier, even behind the scenes, the situation would have been resolved sooner.

The President of the Republic’s political group is trying to close the remaining state alliances for this year’s election. Lula is looking for strong gubernatorial candidates to ally with so that they can add volume to his presidential campaign at the local level. This is what is called in political jargon building platforms.

The person coordinating these conversations is the president of the PT, Edinho Silva.

One of the main problems to be resolved in this area is the Minas Gerais stage. Lula wanted the senator (PSB-MG) to be his alliance’s candidate for governor in the state. Pacheco, however, never made a decisive gesture towards candidacy.

and began to. One of the reasons for this effort is the suspicion that the senator also acted to prevent Jorge Messias from becoming a minister of the STF.
