The national leadership of the PT decided to launch the vice-governor of , Felipe Camarão, as a candidate in the state after an attempt to negotiate with the current governor, Carlos Brandão, failed. President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT), popular in the state, signaled to allies that he will campaign for Camarão.
A PT member, Camarão became vice-governor in an agreement made by the current minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) and former governor of Maranhão in 2022. Brandão, who was Dino’s deputy, took over the government when he left to run for senator.
The then governor ran for re-election that year on a ticket with Camarão, who, under the terms of the agreement made that year, should be the official candidate in 2026.

Braide seeks to position his candidacy without direct links to Lula or the senator (-RJ), the main right-wing pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic.
On the PT side, sectors of the party’s national leadership even considered supporting Orleans after Lula was nominated for a vacancy on the STF, , . This sector suspects that Dino helped in the articulation to defeat Messias, and supporting Brandão’s candidate would be a way of responding to this articulation.
Furthermore, there are local PT groups allied with the state government and who would not like to leave their spaces in Maranhão’s public machinery.
