Sheinbaum throws a hint against Ayuso: "Those who vindicate Hernán Cortés and his atrocities are destined for defeat"

Claudia Sheinbaum did not want to miss the opportunity to replicate the words of Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The Mexican president has indirectly attacked this Tuesday against those who seek to vindicate the Spanish conquest and, warning that “they are destined for defeat.” All this in a context marked by the visit to this country of the president of the Community of Madrid, who in recent hours has praised the figure of the conqueror.

“To those who relive the conquest as salvation we say: they are destined for defeat. To those who believe that the people are stupid, they are destined for defeat. Those who seek to vindicate Hernán Cortés and his atrocities are destined for defeat,” the president stated during her speech at the commemoration of the Battle of May 5 in the central state of Puebla.

The statements come a day after Díaz Ayuso participated in an event in the Mexican capital in which tribute was paid to figures such as Cortés and Queen Isabel la Católica, defending the conquest and “miscegenation” as positive elements of the shared history between Spain and Mexico. The headline event was organized together, after the cancellation of an event scheduled at the Metropolitan Cathedral.

“Mestizaje is the message of hope and joy. In the face of hate speech, which divides, those of us who see life around these alliances have to look for ways to be able to speak freely,” Díaz Ayuso launched during his speech at the Frontón de México venue. “Hopefully one day, sooner rather than later, there will be many more events like this that are held in every corner of Spain, in Mexico, and that never have to be moved,” he added, referring to the canceled event this Tuesday.

Díaz Ayuso’s visit has also generated a wave of protests from Mexican indigenous groups, who denounced the exaltation of the conqueror and demanded an apology for the abuses committed during colonization.
