Durigan defends transition at the end of the 6 x 1 scale, without compensation

Minister says government rejects new tax benefits, but accepts discussing adaptations for specific sectors

The Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, stated, this Wednesday (May 6, 2026), that the government defends a transition in the eventual end of , but without creating tax compensation for companies.

The statement was made during an interview with the program Good morning, Ministerdo Canal Gov. According to Durigan, the reduction in working hours should occur gradually in some sectors, but without repeating tax relief models considered inefficient by the economic team.

“It’s 40 hours a week [de trabalho]2 days a week [de folga]without salary reduction and without compensation with tax benefits”he declared.

The minister stated that the debate on the journey represents a “generational recognition” linked to increased productivity and changes in the labor market.

“The world has moved forward, people are more productive, digital gains, communication gains. This must be recognized without passing the bill to the population itself”these.

Durigan said the government does not consider it appropriate to create new tax incentives to compensate companies for the change.

“It is not appropriate to say here that the State has to compensate the businessman”he declared.

The head of the economic team considered, however, that some segments may need gradual adaptation.

“It is worth discussing transitions for specific cases”he stated.

According to Durigan, studies by the Treasury show that a relevant part of the Brazilian economy no longer depends largely on the 6 X 1 scale.

“The agricultural sector, for example, no longer depends mainly on the 6 X 1 scale. The commerce sector no longer depends mainly on the 6 X 1 scale”, these.

PRODUCTIVITY

Durigan advocated that the government prioritize policies aimed at increasing productivity rather than expanding tax benefits.

He cited cheap credit programs for small businesses, the expansion of guarantee funds and digital training initiatives in institutions such as Senac, Sesi and Senai.

“If we increase digital training, improve credit for small businesses and expand the guarantee fund, couldn’t that be better than creating tax benefits again?”he questioned.

The minister also criticized previous payroll tax relief policies.

According to him, programs implemented since 2011 have increased the cost for the State without producing the expected return in job creation.

“The tax exemption brings great harm to the State and, therefore, to public policies, to full-time schools, to Pé-de-Meia, to SUS, and it has not yielded any returns”he stated.

Durigan said that the government intends to discuss the issue in Congress without abandoning the objective of reducing the weekly working hours.

“It is important to discuss and not stop moving forward in this generational recognition of the end of the 6 X 1 scale”he declared.
