In a context in which nature tourism continues to gain prominence among travelers from all over the world, there are Portuguese destinations that are beginning to gain greater international recognition. One of them has just been distinguished as the fourth most beautiful place on the planet by a well-known British magazine, placing Portugal in the spotlight among some of the most impressive scenery in the world.
Time Out recently released its list of the 51 most beautiful places in the world, an annual selection that brings together natural landscapes and emblematic places from several continents.
The Douro Valley in the global spotlight
Among the best ranked destinations is the Douro Valley, which appears in fourth position, being the best ranked in the national territory.
The region is highlighted by its terraced vineyards and the winding course of the river, which over the centuries has shaped a landscape considered unique. According to the portal, this is an area that continues to produce some of the highest quality wines in the world.
“Its slopes were carved into hundreds of horizontal steps, each planted with centuries-old vines, which gives the valley its unique combination of stripes, curves and textures. Contemplating the undulating hills that disappear into the sparkling river, far below, is like contemplating a work of art: the more you look, the more details you discover”, writes the publication.
The magazine also leaves a suggestion for anyone visiting the region: participate in the traditional grape crushing in lagares, a practice associated with the production of Port wine that still continues on some farms, such as Quinta da Pacheca.
The most beautiful destination is right next door
At the top of the list appears the Picos de Europa National Park, located in northern Spain, described as “a wonder of geography” marked by imposing mountains, deep gorges and proximity to the Cantabrian Sea.
This mountain range rises about 20 kilometers from the coast and reaches an altitude of 2650 meters at Torre de Cerredo, the highest point. The combination of rocky peaks, excavated valleys and views of the sea distinguishes this natural park, according to the same source.
Among the best-known sites in the region are Naranjo de Bulnes, the villages of Sotres and Caín, the Lakes of Covadonga and the famous Rota del Cares.
This pedestrian route, measuring approximately 23 kilometers, crosses a gorge carved into the rock, offering views of steep slopes, waterfalls and natural landscapes of great visual impact, according to those who visit it.
Other destinations among the most beautiful in the world
The list also includes several international reference locations. The historic center of Bologna appears in seventh place, while Capo Testa occupies eighth place.
Also in the top ten are Komodo National Park, the Morgan Library and Museum, Big Sur, Ullswater, Victoria Falls and the Punakha Valley.
The presence of the Douro Valley on the list of the most beautiful places in the world reinforces Portugal’s international recognition, at a time when tourism linked to nature, wine and local traditions continues to attract visitors from different parts of the world.
