NBA fines Boston Celtics star for criticizing refereeing after elimination

A NBA fined Jaylen Brown in US$ 50 thousand this Tuesday (5) for public criticism of the refereeing after the elimination of the Boston Celtics to the Philadelphia 76ers in the playoffs.

The statements were made in a live broadcast on Twitch on Sunday, one day after the 109-100 defeat in Game 7 of the first round series.

Brown stated that he was targeted by referees throughout the series, especially when calling offensive fouls. According to him, criticism made during the regular season would have influenced the arbitration criteria.

“Why are they targeting me? There was clearly an agenda,” he said. “Maybe because I criticized the referees. The response was: ‘we’re going to score everything against you’.”

The player finished the series with 10 offensive fouls – more than twice as many as any other athlete in the period. In the regular season, he was the second player with the most infractions of this type in the league, behind Karl-Anthony Towns.

At 29 years old, Brown is a five-time All-Star and made the 2024 Finals. In the last regular season, he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists in 71 games. In the playoffs, he scored 25.7 points per game.
