The federal government is suing the city of Denver over its longstanding assault weapons ban, which it says violates the U.S. Constitution.
The administration of US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the city of Denver and its police in an attempt to overturn the ban on assault weapons that has been in place in the city since 1989, the AP reported.
According to the US Department of Justice, this ban violates the Second Amendment of the US Constitution guaranteeing the right to own arms. Federal authorities therefore called on the city to stop enforcing the ban, but its officials refused.
The Gun Ban Controversy
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said the city has no plans to back down, calling the ban a sensible measure to help curb gun violence and protect the public.
The Trump administration is also considering legal action against the state of Colorado over a ban on high-capacity magazines that was passed after a 2012 mass shooting.
