The Public Ministry archived all cases of suspicious deaths due to lack of assistance during the INEM strike. The news was released this Thursday by .
The 12 deaths occurred during the overtime strike of pre-hospital emergency technicians from the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) in November 2024.
Six cases were being investigated, including the death of a 53-year-old man in Ansião, in Pombal, and another 86-year-old man in Bragança.
The Public Ministry decided to archive the cases, despite the conclusions of the General Inspectorate of Health Activities about possible failures in the assistance. To Diário de Noticias, INEM said it had not yet been notified.
Minister and president of INEM admitted mistakes
During the pre-hospital emergency technicians’ strike, between October 30 and November 4, 2024, 12 deaths were recorded, three of them associated with delays in assistance, according to the General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS).
The Minister of Health acknowledged, in the parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI) into INEM, last April, that the management of the two strikes that affected INEM in 2024 and that the institute “would not have realized” the possibility of decreeing minimum services.
The president of INEM considered, in March, that there was during the strike, stating that the institute “purely and simply stopped answering calls”.
