Lula says Trump didn’t bring up the subject of Pix during the meeting

Brazilian President hoped to discuss the topic and took Finance Minister for possible debate; North American did not mention the tool

The president (PT) stated, this Thursday (May 7, 2026), that the president of the United States, (Republican Party), did not mention the subject of Pix during the 3-hour meeting at the White House. The PT member said that he had brought the Minister of Finance, Dario Durigan, because he expected the issue to come to light.

“He didn’t touch on the subject of Pix, so I didn’t either”said Lula in a statement to the press at the Brazilian Embassy in Washington. The president joked: “I hope that one day he will make a Pix. Because many American companies already do it.”

In July 2025, the US opened an investigation under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 into Brazilian trade practices considered “disloyal”. The document from USTR, the office of the American Trade Representative, cites the “government electronic payment services”reading interpreted as a reference to Pix.

The investigation could result in surcharges and trade restrictions for Brazil. Lula proposed that ministers from both countries meet within 30 days to present a proposal to resolve the trade dispute. Trump accepted the deadline.

Pix is seen in Washington as a state model that reduces the space for American credit card brands and payment services to operate.
