Municipality of Lagos transfers around 1.5 million to reinforce parishes’ skills

The Lagos City Council approved the transfer of around 1.5 million euros to the five parishes of the municipality, reinforcing the financial resources destined for the management of local competencies.

According to the municipality, this measure aims to strengthen the role of parish councils as structures “closer to the populations” and, therefore, “more knowledgeable and prepared to respond to the specific needs of their respective communities”.

The financial resources will be applied to areas such as management and maintenance of green spaces, cleaning of roads and public spaces, cleaning of gutters and drains, as well as minor repairs in pre-school and 1st cycle educational establishments.

Parishes take on new responsibilities

The funds are also allocated to the maintenance of spaces around schools and the day-to-day management of fairs and markets.

The municipality states that the approval and formalization of the competence transfer agreements, previously analyzed and agreed between the parties, represent a contribution to strengthening the role of parishes as “an essential hub of proximity democracy and equal access to public services”.

The city hall also considers that this measure contributes to promoting greater territorial cohesion in the municipality.

São Gonçalo de Lagos receives greater funding

Among the parishes covered, São Gonçalo de Lagos receives the largest transfer, in the amount of R$555,341.94.

Next come the parish of Luz, with 351,897.92 euros, Odiáxere, with 299,079.06 euros, Bensafrim, with 170,845.20 euros, and Barão de São João, with 127,298.88 euros.

It is emphasized that these transfers make it possible to reinforce the intervention capacity of parish councils in essential areas of the populations’ daily lives.
