Two members of the Spanish Civil Guard died on Friday after their vessels collided while chasing suspected drug traffickers in the Atlantic. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
Spain’s proximity to Morocco, a major hemp producer, puts it on the front lines of such anti-drug missions, while chases between the police and drug traffickers regularly lead to fatal accidents.
Regarding the latest incident, the Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) said that the accident occurred off the coast of the southern province of Huelva. Two garda officers were killed – one instantly and the other later – while two others were injured. “Shocked” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez offered his condolences to the families of the victims on Platform X.
The main union of the Civil Guard (AUGC) said in a statement that the tragedy was “a direct consequence of a risky situation, which was documented, analyzed and formally communicated to the administration, which decided not to act”, quotes AFP.
