“OL and V belong to everyone”: Small Portuguese company defeats Louis Vuitton in court

The Portuguese company Licores do Vale won a lawsuit filed by the French giant Louis Vuitton, related to alleged similarities between logos.

The case had been going on for more than a year and focused on the use of the letters “L” and “V” in the symbol of the small company in Monção. The French brand argued that the Portuguese company’s logo was very similar to that of the well-known luxury house.

After the favorable decision, Licores do Vale reacted on social media with an emotional message, thanking the support received throughout the process. “The ‘L’ and ‘V’ belong to everyone”, wrote the Portuguese company.

According to Jornal de Notícias, the action was filed with the Intellectual Property Court and challenged the registration of the trademark approved by the National Institute of Industrial Property.

Producer André Ferreira previously explained that the logo was created together with his partner, Tânia Afonso, and that the letters simply represented “Licores do Vale”. The inverted “V” would still symbolize the mountains in the region.

The couple sells liqueurs, jams, honey and artisan cookies at farmers’ markets and local markets.

The story quickly gained prominence on social media, where many users praised the victory of the small Portuguese company against one of the biggest luxury brands in the world.
