The American president rejected in particularly high tones, as unacceptable, his proposal for an agreement with them to end the war. With a post on Truth Social, the US president asserted that: “I just read the response of the so-called “representatives” of Iran. I don’t like it – IT IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DONALD J. TRUMP”.
It is noted that earlier the Wall Street Journal in its live blog on the war in Iran had reported that the Iranian counterproposal did not include any commitment to the country’s uranium, as this issue was postponed to be resolved later. Trump’s announcement and rejection of the Iranian proposal is expected to increase uncertainty about the end of the conflict, prolonging the stalemate and bringing the possibility of escalation closer.
What was in the proposal?
According to the Tasnim news agency, the text rejected by Trump underlines Iran’s urgent need to end the war and asks for guarantees against future aggression against Iran.
In addition, it emphasizes the necessity of lifting American sanctions and Iran’s management of the Straits of Hormuz, provided certain commitments are met by the United States.
The release of frozen Iranian assets within a 30-day period is also part of the Iran text. Then, after those 30 days are up, another key issue could come up — that of the nuclear program. However, at this stage, Iran is not proposing to negotiate on its nuclear program.
Essentially, Iran says it is open to negotiations, but wants a gradual series of issues resolved.
