
Protest against “extraordinary profits” from large companies. Activists took food and hygiene products from Continente, without paying, in boxes.
Movement members Climax This Thursday, they carried out a protest action at a Continente store, in Campo Pequeno, in Lisbon, in which they removed, without paying, food and hygiene products.
According to the group, the items were then distributed at a stand near Estação Oriente, in an initiative presented as a denunciation of the “extraordinary profits” of large supermarkets in the context of the climate crisis and rising cost of living.
The action, titled “They eat everything and leave nothing”, involved around a dozen activists. Among the products withdrawn were bread, baby formula, toothpaste and sanitary pads.
On some shelves, participants also left warning messages about the effects of climate change on food systems and the risk of shortages of essential goods.
In a statement, Climáximo stated that “no one should have to pay to eat while the rich profit like never before”. The movement accuses companies like Sonae and Galp of benefiting from the current situation, while many families face increasing difficulties in meeting basic expenses.
The activist Inês Telescited by the group, reinforced that dependence on fossil fuels is worsening the cost of living and could intensify the shortage of essential products.
“Our dependence on fossil fuels is not only drastically increasing the cost of living, but will increasingly cause shortages of essential goods”, says the activist.
In the images released by the movement, boxes with logos from several distribution chains are visible, including Auchan, Pingo Doce and Lidl. Climáximo frames the action within a broader critique of the so-called “fossil war” and the social and economic impacts of the climate crisis.
