The Trump administration has released about 160 files on UFOs, but experts say the documents bring little new and show no evidence of extraterrestrial technology.
A is generating more skepticism than enthusiasm among experts in the field, who consider that the documents revealed bring little that is truly new and do not present any proof of extraterrestrial technology.
The US Department of Defense published on May 8 about on “unidentified anomalous phenomena” (UAP)promising “unprecedented transparency” and announcing future disqualifications. Among the materials disclosed are reports on “flying saucers” from the 1940s, photographs taken during the Apollo missions and videos of unidentified objects captured by the military.
But Mick West, researcher of alleged UFO sightings, considers that the disclosure focuses more on volume than on content.
“I think what we have here is quantity over quality. We don’t have anything resembling irrefutable proof that would give us great proof of any kind of advanced technology, much less something like aliens.”
West emphasizes that many of the documents had already been made public during the Joe Biden administration and says that the new videos released are too limited to allow solid conclusions.
“All we see are little white dots moving on the screen and we can’t identify them because they are so small,” he told Reuters.
Adds that several cases can be explained by balloons or parallax effects, an optical illusion caused by the rapid movement of military drones that record the images.
The analyst points out one of the most commented videos, known as “chandelier video”, as an example of a simple technical explanation. According to West, the cross shape observed in the image corresponds only to an optical artifact caused by the structure of the camera itself.
Also Greg Eghigian, professor of History and Bioethics at Penn State University and researcher into the history of UFO reports, considers that the files fall short of the expectations created.
“I would say that at this point we don’t see anything very surprising.”
For the academic, much of the material disclosed will be mainly of historical and highlights that many documents appear without sufficient context to be interpreted correctly.
“There are images and films that appear without any context. We don’t even know exactly what we are seeing or what we are expected to deduce based on it”.
Eghigian considers that the fascination surrounding UFOs remains linked to a deeper issue: the possibility that humanity is not alone in the universe.
“Perhaps the human species is not the only intelligent life form in the universe and there may be other civilizations interested in learning about us, which is exciting in itself.”.
