Benfica ends Portuguese League undefeated with Mourinho, but out of the Champions League

This Saturday, Benfica ended its participation in the 2025/26 Portuguese Championship with a 3-1 victory over Estoril, away from home, and concluded the competition undefeated under the command of José Mourinho. Despite the undefeated campaign, the São Paulo club only finished in third place and was left out of the next edition of the Champions League.

Over the 34 rounds, Benfica accumulated 23 wins and 11 draws, reaching 80 points. The consistent performance, however, was not enough to reach the top two, which guaranteed a direct place in the UEFA Champions League.

The runner-up went to , who finished with 81 points. Already, the team of Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, who led the tournament alone with 88 points.

Even without lifting the cup, the season marks a historic unbeaten campaign for Benfica. The team went through the entire championship without suffering defeat, something rare in Portuguese football, but ended up being hampered by the high number of draws in the final stretch of the competition.

With third place, Benfica will compete in the Europa League in the 2026/27 season, while Porto and Sporting will represent Portugal in the next Champions League.
