Datafolha: Negative evaluation of the Lula government stands at 39% – 05/16/2026 – Politics

After three years and four months of government, 39% of those interviewed by consider that the president () is doing a bad or terrible job, while 30% consider the management to be good or excellent, and 29% classify it as regular.

The situation is stable in relation to . In April, 40% characterized the government negatively, while 29% understood that the work was positive, and 29% believed that the balance sheet was regular. 2% had not given their opinion.

At the beginning of 2025, there was one amid successive government crises, including that of Pix. Since then, although the positive evaluation has partially recovered, the disapproval rate has never returned to its previous level, around 30%.

Most of the interviews in the current round of Datafolha were carried out before the repercussion of the news that the senator (-RJ), pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, asked the former banker, from, under the justification of financing a film about his father, (PL).

Datafolha interviewed 2,004 people aged 16 or over, with a personal approach at flow points, on Tuesday (12) and Wednesday (13). The maximum margin of error is two percentage points, plus or minus. The confidence level is 95%. The survey is registered with the (Superior Electoral Court) under code BR-00290/2026.

In terms of segments, 41% of men and 37% of women consider the government to be bad or terrible. 28% of them and 31% of them believe that management is regular so far. Among both men and women, 30% rate management as good or excellent. In this cut, the margin of error is 3 percentage points, plus or minus.

Women were one of the most faithful groups on the scale in , and there is a strong relationship between government evaluation and voting.

Among those who vote for Lula, 1% classify the government as bad/terrible, 30% as regular, and 68% as excellent/good. This distribution is reversed among those who vote for Flávio Bolsonaro. In this case, 75% have a negative evaluation, 21%, regular, and 3%, positive.

Among those who say they vote for (), 44% classify the PT government as bad or terrible, 37% as regular, and 18% as good or excellent. The same occurs among those who vote for (). In this case, 47% say that the PT administration is bad or terrible, 44%, fair, and 6%, excellent or good.

The data in general point to the maintenance of the situation observed in the previous month, indicating that recent initiatives by the Lula government, such as , may not have had an effect on the government’s assessment, at least not yet.

The same could be said for those who earn up to R$5,000, one of the banners of the 2022 campaign that came into force at the beginning of this year.

Compared to other presidents at this point in their term, since , the 39% negative evaluation is second only to Bolsonaro’s index.

In 2022, 48% saw the then president this way. The index was 26% in 2014, 5% for Lula in 2010 and 22% in his first term, in 2006. FHC scored 21% in 1998.

When asked whether they approve or disapprove of Lula’s work as president, 45% say they approve of the government, while 51% say they disapprove. They didn’t know how to answer 4%. There was no change compared to April.

The institute also asked how much Lula did for the country in these three years and four months in relation to expectations.

For 59%, the PT member did less than expected, while 23% responded that he did what was expected, and 13% said he did more than expected.

According to 47% of those interviewed, the Lula government has had more defeats than victories, while 39% say the opposite, that the administration has had more victories than defeats. 3% said that neither defeats nor victories, and 3% responded that victories and defeats were in the same proportion. 8% said they did not know how to give their opinion.
