Tie with Trump can avoid tariffs and attract investment, Lula tells WP

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, in an interview with Washington Post, that his relationship with the president of the United States, Donald Trump, can avoid more tariffs and attract North American investments to Brazil.

Throughout the interview with the newspaper, Lula also asked Trump to , stating that the country “needs a chance”.

The Brazilian president also commented on trade relations with China. The PT member highlighted that, currently, trade with the country represents twice as much as business with the USA, but pointed out that this “is not Brazil’s preference”.

The speeches take place after , held on May 7th, in Washington. On the occasion, the leaders discussed topics such as trade tariffs and cooperation in .

The meeting lasted around three hours and was considered positive by members of the Brazilian government. After the meeting, Trump classified Lula as a “dynamic” president and stated that the conversation was “very productive”.
