Tremor hit the Guangxi region in the early morning; more than 7,000 people had to be evacuated
A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Guangxi region in southwest China. Chinain the early hours of this Monday (May 18, 2026). The tremor killed 2 people and forced the evacuation of more than 7,000 residents in the city of Liuzhou, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.
The was recorded at 0:21 am (local time) in Liunan district, at a depth of 8 km. According to Xinhua, emergency teams located the bodies of two people who had been reported missing shortly after the quake. A 91-year-old man was rescued from the rubble and taken to a hospital in stable condition.
Another 4 people were hospitalized with injuries. None are life-threatening, state broadcaster CCTV and Xinhua reported. In total, 13 buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake.
Railway authorities halted some transport to carry out safety inspections on the tracks. Despite structural damage to buildings, the supply of energy, water and gas, as well as communication and traffic lines in the affected area, operates normally.
The Chinese government has activated a level 4 emergency response to coordinate relief efforts in the province. The China Earthquake Administration and the Guangxi regional relief center have raised the protocol to level 3.
