Spanish midfielder Fermín López is out of the World Cup due to a broken toe, suffered in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Betis at the weekend, the Catalan club said on Monday (18).
In a brief statement, Barça explained that Fermín suffered a “fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot” and will have to undergo surgery.
The 23-year-old midfielder was one of the team’s highlights in the Spanish title campaign this season.
Having played seven games for Spain, his presence on coach Luis de la Fuente’s 26-man squad, which will be announced in a week’s time, was taken for granted.
But the surgery completely rules him out of the World Cup, from June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
A player with offensive characteristics, Fermín scored 13 goals and provided 16 assists in the season, considering all competitions.
