Some vacation experiences stick in a person’s memory forever. It’s no surprise that many people remember the exorbitant prices they paid. This also happened to our reader Emilia. After reading articles about prices on our website, she remembered her own experience.

“I read two experiences of women in connection with prices in gastronomy in Turkey and Belarus. In this connection, I remembered my completely opposite experience. In the autumn before the adoption of the euro, I was in Venice“, she recalled.

The price shocked her. “When I saw people sitting on St. Mark’s Square calmly drinking strongly scented coffee, I said to myself, I will allow myself to sit and drink coffee like this at least once. After all, the cups were very small and it can’t be very expensive. I cannot describe my shock. After conversion, a tiny strong coffee cost me 250 Sk. Well, thanks to the fact that we have the euro, which people should be aware of,” thinks Emília.

Slovak crowns were used in Slovakia for more than fifteen years after the establishment of the independent republic. A big change took place on January 1, 2009, when Slovakia officially adopted the euro and became part of the eurozone. The Slovak koruna finally ended years later and was replaced by a common European currency, to which people initially got used to only very slowly.

When converting Slovak crowns to euros today, it is only an indicative conversion according to the official conversion rate that was established when the euro was adopted. If we used only a very approximate conversion, 250 Slovak crowns would represent about 8.30 euros today. However, the real value of money has changed significantly over the decades due to inflation and economic development.
