Datafolha: 59% did not know that the Senate rejected Messias – 05/18/2026 – Politics

Considered a historic defeat for the government, it was not made known to more than half of the population, as shown in the most recent survey by .

According to a survey by the institute, 59% of people were not aware that the Union’s attorney general, , had his name barred from the vacancy opened in the court by the Federal, on the 29th.

Among the other 41% who said they were aware, 19% said they were well informed, 18% more or less informed, and 4% poorly informed.

The survey’s margin of error is plus or minus two percentage points, when considering the total sample of respondents. 2,004 people were heard in 139 municipalities across the country, last Tuesday (12) and Wednesday (13), and it was registered with the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) with number BR-00290/2026.

Among those who heard about the episode, 53% say that Messiah’s rejection made the government weaker, while 7% say it became stronger. On the other hand, 36% believe that the rejection did not interfere with the government’s strength and another 4% had no opinion.

The margin of error for the portion of interviewees who were aware of the rejection is 3 points.

Although Messiah’s nomination was treated as a nod to evangelicals, the level of awareness of the rejection is the same in this segment compared to the general population: in both groups, 59% say they were not aware of what happened.

Among Lula’s voters, 61% were not aware of the rejection, a higher figure than Flávio’s voters, among whom this rate is 50%.

Among those who say they will vote blank, null or for no candidate in this year’s elections, this rate reaches 72%.

It was the first time that the Senate rejected the nomination of a President of the Republic since 1894, when five names chosen by Floriano Peixoto for the court were blocked.

Messiah was rejected by 42 senators, a number close to what would be needed to approve his name, which would be 41 parliamentarians. Lula’s nominee, however, only reached 34 votes in favor.

Despite the defeat, Lula told allies that, with the intention of reaffirming that the choice is a prerogative of the President of the Republic.

Such a hypothesis could result in a legal fight or mean that the STF, in fact, will continue with one fewer minister until 2027. This is because of a 2010 Senate rule.

In addition to the variable that Lula intends to insist on Messias, the possibility is also on the table, even in a scenario in which Lula sends another name for the vacancy.

Alcolumbre, who had another favorite for the position, sponsored the defeat of Messias’ name, including the influence of Bolsonarism, which has an electoral flag in the court’s criticisms.

During the Messias hearing, the defense that the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso would only be filled in the next term, by whoever wins the elections, was made by the senator (-PR), a name that will run with Flávio’s support for the government of Paraná.

In response, senator Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE) made a scathing criticism of such a speech, classifying it as an emptying of the president’s powers, and even alluding to the coup-like movements that culminated on January 8th.
