Half of distance learning degree courses have unsatisfactory performance

Just over half of the country’s EAD (Distance Education) teacher training courses have reprehensible quality, according to data released by the MEC (Ministry of Education) this Wednesday (20).

The balance shows that 51.8% of distance learning degrees in pedagogy and degrees obtained concepts 1 or 2 in the Enade das Licenciaturas – the lowest grades in the quality indicator, considered unsatisfactory. In total, 682 distance learning courses were at this level.

Warning for the future of basic education

The result shows a worrying scenario in teacher training, as 60% of participants were completing distance learning courses, which reinforces a preference for distance learning courses, which tend to have lower concepts.

The data raises an alert for the future of basic education, since the distance modality concentrates most of the country’s futures: 60% of the students who participated in the evaluation were completing distance learning courses.

On the other hand, courses that achieved grades from 3 to 5 (considered a regular to excellent level) accounted for 56.8% of the total degrees evaluated.

The indicator was calculated based on student performance in the exam, applied in October 2025.

In-person teaching

The performance of students at PND reinforces this. While 73.9% of in-person degree graduates were assessed as proficient, only 46.9% of distance learning graduates achieved proficiency.

The gap in quality between online and remote was evident in the students’ success rate: while 73.9% of those completing in-person degrees were assessed as proficient, the rate plummeted to just 46.9% among distance learning students.

The release of the report coincides with National Pedagogy Day, also celebrated this Wednesday.

The exam evaluated undergraduate courses, in-person and EAD, in the following areas: visual arts, biological sciences, social sciences, computing, physical education, philosophy, physics, geography, history, literature (English, Portuguese, Portuguese and Spanish, Portuguese and English), mathematics, music, pedagogy and chemistry.
